Concept Mobiles That Should and Shouldn't Become a Reality

0

And then there were those that should remain - although technologically advanced as they may seem - on the drawing board. Here are my choices for the Top Concept Mobiles that shouldn't make it past the drawing board -
This is purely my opinion of course, but a flip phone made of glass is nothing more than a fingerprint magnet and trust me those prints can get really annoying especially when they’re obstructing something on the display. Plus you’ll have to worry about scratches.

MOBILE SERVICES - LET THE FUN BEGIN

0

iPhone AppStore, Android Market, Nokia Ovi, and thousands of AppStores from third parties are being opened worldwide. That is the no-limit entertainment, that is going to go mass-market in the following 2 years. Mobile applications and services on mobile web are slowly becoming a dominant feature of these platforms, and soon will become a standard of every mobile phone sold. This means that any phone sold in the next quarters will be a browsing and mobile service phone. Subsequently, there is a higher and higher chance that every time a new phone is sold, that a new mobile services user was just born. With the iPhone, it’s definitely like that, and if there is something that we can’t take from Apple it is that they have supported this heavily.

Mobile internet and mobile services have risen in the last year, probably the most since the 10 year history of GSM mobile phones. We are talking about an uptake that has led to mobile web outnumbering the number of people on the normal internet in many countries in Europe (i.e. Nordic Countries) and Asia . This is massive. Mobile phones are used more and more in every day life, but not for calling and messaging, but for rich services, that generate more and more interesting content.

Imagine a world fully connected with mobile applications that make it easy to check your Facebook, that fully cross-connect your contacts in your phone to the ones on your PC. Imagine your calendar has all social features, which means you can immediately share it with your friends, and they can come to your event. Or if you are just hanging around outside somewhere, you just simply search a nearby restaurant, which your best friend recommended to go to a week ago, and they just have the best Sushi in town.

Those are the types of things people will be doing with their phone daily, and many of them are already playing with it. The truth is though, that these technologies are still not adopted by a sizeable population of users, and there is still some extensive work to do on the UI and GUI side of the mobile phones, and both the applications and thus work for their vendors.

I think, we are living in the most amazing times of mobile phones truly coming into our lives. Mobile phones bundled with data tarrifs for 12 months for free, mobile data capping arriving, and mobile services to come as a mass dominator of communication. Look at companies like Skype, eBuddy, Google, Yahoo, Facebook – all entering the mobile space with one key goal – attract as many people as they can to their mobile services – and they are slowly succeeding. Google Maps are the only usable mobile maps in many territories, and Nokia’s Navteq will have issues making a compelling offering for normal people usage in their daily mobile lives. All of those applications are downloadable for free, and many even don’t include advertising. Those who do and are ad-funded, are usually ad-funded through companies such as Admob, who are doing a great job on the monetisation part.

So what is your opinion? What mobile services will kick ass in 2009 and onwards? What mobile service are you looking for? We’ve asked our opinion leaders that question this week, and let’s see what they reply.

This is an exciting time for mobile, and an exciting time for users – who will have better access to information, anywhere they are.

MWC2009: LG mobile with a transparent keyboard

1

LG came with a powerful set of phones to Barcelona, one of their most interesting models is called GD900. The phone is a top hype due to its design, as the sliding keyboard is transparent and its told to be made of glass, but we'll check this out personally.
Unfortunately not many specific things have been told about the specs, but it's sure that GD900 will have stereo Bluetooth support, as there will be a headset made specifically for this phone from LG. We also know the handset's size: 105 x 52.5 x 13.4 mm, and it's also sure that the phone will support 7.2 megabit HSDPA data transfer.

We were told that today they will tell additional infos, but it's note pretty clear why should we wait 24 hours for that. Anyway, pictures are coming up from the LG booth and of the really special and unique phone.

SONY-ERICSSON XPERIA REVIEW

1
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 mobile phone is quite long and narrow, although also somewhat thick, mainly caused by the sideways sliding QWERTY keyboard. The touchscreen is of reasonable size, however, somewhat on the narrow side, and below the screen some additional buttons are found to answer or end a call, as well as the panel button, arrow buttons and a confirmation button. The front of the Sony Ericsson X1 cell phone is made of metal, just like the back cover, which gives the cell phone a solid appearance. Standard included with the Sony Ericsson Experia are a battery charger, a data cable, a headset, two stylus pens, several manuals per functionality and a software CD

Morph is one of the newest and most innovative ideas today coming to us from the great minds at Cambridge and NOKIA Together, they have devised a new way to present their phone to the world: with true flexibility of design. Morph is an idea that will demonstrate to the world how mobile handsets of the future can be made of material that will allow them to stretch and flex into radically different shapes. Can you imagine being about to sculpt your mobile phone? Well now you can! This new idea will demonstrate the functionality that can be achieved using nanotechnology in the creation of our phones of tomorrow. The goal was to reinvent the form and functionality of today’s mobile phone, and they really hit the nail on the head with this one.Combining art and science, Cambridge and Nokia have found the perfect way to show off the real potential of nanoscience. Through Morph, they are finding new, safe, and controlled ways to use new materials. This new idea may ultimately affect everything that the future holds for the world of mobile handsets and mobile handset users. Ideas used in Morph may be incorporated into phones that will be released in the near future. Within the next seven years, initially only for the high end bidders, we will start to see these materials in new handsets. Nanotechnology could eventually lead to lowest costs for manufacturing and offer the possibility for integration of complex functionality at these lower prices.

Windows Mobile 6 review roundup

0

Now that the mobile world has had a little time to digest Microsoft's latest ofering, we thought we'd take this opportunity to circle back, put our ear to the ground, and have a look at some of the press Windows Mobile 6 is generating. LAPTOP Magazine spent most of its time with a Standard device ("Smartphone" in the Windows Mobile 5 world), and although the OS bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor in pretty much every respect, the review manages to focus on the positive: Office document viewing, improved stability (our apologies if we just jinxed anyone), and the modestly improved Pocket Internet Explorer. PC Magazine took a more critical view of Microsoft's failure to revolutionize its mobile platform, passing on correcting some of its more serious flaws -- the lack of true process management possibly the biggest -- but still calls it "the best mobile operating system out there," giving it big props for smooth Vista integration and little efficiency boosts like the email client's SmartFilter. CNET draws the same conclusion about Windows Mobile 6 being evolutionary rather than revolutionary, pointing out that many basic tasks still require more clicks than they should, but the bundled Office apps were a crowd pleaser. As far as we're concerned, the biggest news here is not the software but the new (and varied) Hardware that's being launched to run it -- at least until Microsoft Gets seriuos about a next-gen mobile UI, anyway.
